Chile has inhabitant that mostly come under the Mapuche Community. Mapuche is a group of residents living in southern central parts of Chile as well as some areas that belong to Patagonia. Mapuche’s literal meaning is people of earth. This group is composed of a numerous groups who have joined together to form a group because of commonness in their social, economic and religious structures. These people have lived through quiet difficult times in their past to save their land and freedom. As a matter of fact, they have managed to remain free and independent. And for America, it is a very important community because their people have survived through difficult situations and yet remain unchanged in their culture and traditions.
The people living here have embraced the old customs and traditions with warm hands. To be more particular they are a kinship group. For example, they look at the family tree through their father and/or husband’s line, and a newlywed couple will remain at husband’s father’s pace until they can get one of their own. These are felt like they have been some present traditions but they long back to ancient times. Mapuche people are believed to have their own sets of beliefs and they abide by them. Even upon huge impression on Mapuche people by Chileans, they have never managed to alter the customs and traditions of Mapuche people. They follow the fertility and agriculture festival for a span of few days; they do this on special lands where they pray to God, slaughter animals, harvest crops, etc. Their religion is more likely one of animal and ancestors; they have their own myths and legends for the purpose but they do believe in afterworld.
When considering the old times, the land that was under the Mapuche people was very fertile and they very able to grow crops and earn their livings. As of now, the persistent war conditions have ruined their lands; their lands were taken away and the ones that were returned are not in a condition to grow crops. People of Mapuche have attempted to get back their lands but it turned out to be worse from them; they were declared terrorist and were killed. So they stopped doing so, and instead of this; they are trying to get themselves educated to fight back strongly.
People here have fought against three enemies in order to preserve their cultural heritage but it is not wrong to say that still they are given no acceptance at all. Chileans are ruling them and there have been no laws and regulations that guarantee the rights of Mapuche. They are not recognized by Chileans as well as they don’t have a place in the constitution. They cannot even get themselves educated because the educational system are against the culture of Mapuche people. At any moment, their land can be snatched and they can be thrown out because they don’t have the rights to claim their land. However, these circumstances have lead the people to get education and win back their lands legally.
Few months ago my husband and I took a trip to South America. In particular, we went to Argentina to explore the world of Latin America. We visited many little towns as well as dedicated a couple of days to the big and gorgeous Buenos Aires.
